The Villains Are Coming: An Interview with Jody Houser

Faith’s most fearsome foes and ruthless rogues—including Chris Chriswell, Murder Mouse, Dark Star, and Sydney—have finally united, creating an unstoppable coalition of evil with one goal in mind: Destroy Faith Herbert! Together, they are The Faithless…and if Los Angeles’ greatest hero doesn’t think fast and fly even faster, they’re going to ground the sky-soaring psiot for good!

Faith Volume 4: The Faithless (9781682152195, $14.99) collects issues #9–12 and will be available August 22, 2017. In this exclusive interview, Jody Houser opens up about the upcomng graphic novel and how it furthers Faith as a person and a superhero.

Ashley Kronsberg: Faith is one of a kind in that she speaks to a community that is not usually represented in comics. How has writing for Faith impacted you as a writer and how you approach other projects?

Jody Houser: The response from fans of Faith show just how important it is to see characters like yourself in the media that you consume. Hearing what people like in terms of Faith's portrayal, particularly her authenticity and the fact that her personality is the main focus of the book/character, goes to show that readers want multi-faceted characters. It's also showed me how the audience can tell when you put some of the truth of yourself into the character.

Ashley Kronsberg: In Faith Volume 4: The Faithless, we see Faith go up against some of her most fearsome villains. What can readers expect to see from this story arc? How does it differ from the previous volumes?

Jody Houser: The story of "The Faithless" is the culmination of everything that has come before. Faith has dealt with a number of different villains during her run and has had some close calls, but that's nothing compared to facing down a whole team of supervillains determined to destroy her.

Ashley Kronsberg: What would you say is the most important thing Faith takes away from this arc? How does this battle further her as a character; and how does it change or expand what readers will see in the future?

Jody Houser: This arc has a major shift for Faith's life and how the world sees her in particular. It also forces her to take a look at her strengths and how she operates as a hero. While some might say her powers are the reason she's a hero, I always thought they were just the means by which she became the hero she was always meant to be.

Ashley Kronsberg: Finally – since Faith Volume 4: The Faithless is jam packed with villains, who would you say was the most interesting one to write into this story and why?

Jody Houser: Chris Chriswell is my favorite of Faith's villains. He's her dark mirror: just as genre-savvy as she is, but taking all the wrong lessons from the comics and other media he consumed when he was a kid. It's always fun to write how he reacts to someone mentioning his career as a superhero actor.
