Comically Aware: Graphic Novel Reviews for Booksellers

DBD introduces a new graphic novel review series by bookseller Bianca Walters. Every month, Bianca will provide reviews of three graphic novels, providing information on suitable audiences for each title, artistic comparisons, and sell-through suggestions.

Bingo Love
CONTRIBUTORS: Tee Franklin, Jenn St. Onge
PUBLISHER: Image Comics
ISBN: 9781534307506
ON SALE: 2/20/2018
SECTIONS: Graphic Novels, LGBT, 13+

Tee Franklin (@MizTeeFranklin) and Jenn St Onge (@princess_jem4)  have created a Valentine for you, whoever you are. Hazel and Mari’s love is a sweeping force of destiny that begins at church bingo in 1963, and remains warm and true through over 50 years and a lot of discrimination - mostly from their own families. Their story is one that feels at once like the first sight of a lighthouse after a long journey and hug from someone who really knows you. Addressing issues of homophobia in the home and church, Bingo Love treats every aspect of this story with compassion and hard-won clarity.

For Fans of: Love. But also cuddly manga and graphic memoirs.

Art: St. Onge’s representation of beautiful black females of all ages in this comic is so obviously crafted with love and adoration. The color palette reflects the amorous joy that fuels the story, and earns that butterflies-the-tummy feeling with every panel.

Sell it: To those looking for something romantic to warm up their chilly winter hearts and anyone with interest in queer stories/histories.

Beautiful Canvas
CONTRIBUTORS: Ryan K. Lindsay, Sami Kivela
ISBN: 9781628751826
ON SALE: 03/06/18
SECTIONS: Graphic Novels, 16+

With more gritty swagger and hot pink blood than could ever be necessary, Beautiful Canvas follows hitwoman Lon Eisley through - among many other things - a really crappy day. There is pyrokinesis and monster muscle all around, but what makes this title a worthy ride is the three females driving the plot: Milla is the bored brutal billionaire, Asia is Lon’s pregnant girlfriend, a mysterious figure with skills hiding behind her circular spectacles, with Lone herself the tortured warrior necessary to complete the brooding tone of this twisty tale.

For Fans of: The peripheral mythos building of Neil Gaiman and Tarantino flicks.

Art: Kivela is also on the recently released (and currently on fire) 1st issue of Abbott.

Sell it: To someone looking for a cinematic comic with a lot of grit.

CONTRIBUTORS: Johnnie Christmas, Tamra Bonvillian
PUBLISHER: Image Comics
ISBN: 9781534304949
ONSALE: 03/13/18
SECTION: Graphic Novels, Fantasy, 13+

The fire that churns in the earth - that creates life, by way of ecstatic death has a living, breathing ambassador among the people. That ambassador, the Goddess has been insulated for ages from those people, in the hands of The Cult of the Goddess. Keegan will change this, but prophecy is unclear about whether she will be the salvation or destruction of the world. Christmas creates a tumultuous environment for his developing pantheon to stomp around in, with revolution in the air and all the human intricacies that are key to an engrossing mythology.

For Fans of: Stories where the protagonist is struggling with a new power, and Mount Olympus-style intrigue, but without the actual krusty classic storylines.

Art: Bonvillian’s coloring is on point, with a dazzling (and essential to the mythos) contrast between the elements at play in Firebug.

Sell it: To anyone who read Angel Catbird, but also in the YA section to youngens (though be cautious, as there is a bit of nudity) hungry for mythological action.
