Library of Congress Highlights Female Artists and Their Contributions to Comics

Announced on Smithsonian.com, the Library of Congress has launched a new exhibition highlighting female artists and their contributions to comic strips, magazine covers and political cartoons. The exhibit features nearly 70 pieces of work from 43 artists working between the 19th centry and today. The artwork ranges from Alice Barber Stephens' Impressionist-influenced illustrations to Dalia Messick's strip Brenda Starr, Reporter

“There are a lot of women who did really interesting, innovative work who have been overlooked and are worthy of further study,” said Martha Kennedy, curator of popular and applied graphic arts at the Library of Congress. Kennedy states that she was interested in “how imagery of women and gender relations has changed over time” and “how broadening of subject matter happens over time and in different art forms.” This curiousity led to the implementation of the new exhibit.

The exhibit - Drawn to Purpose: American Women Illustrators and Cartoonists - will be open until October 20, 2018.
