Get Happy! With First Trailer of the New Syfy Series

After announcing their 'reboot' initiative, SYFY has revealed their orders for a television adaptation of Grant Morrison's graphic novel Happy! from Image Comics. On October 5th during New York Comic Con, Syfy screened an exclusive trailer for the highly anticipated series, starring Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU).

Happy! follows Nick Sax, a corrupt, intoxicated ex-cop turned hit-man, adrift in a stinking twilight world of casual murder, soulless sex, eczema, and betrayal. With a hit gone wrong, a bullet in his side, the cops and the mob on his tail, and a monstrous child killer in a Santa suit on the loose, Nick seems to have met his doom... until he has an unfortuante run-in with fate in the form of a tiny, relentlessly positive blue horse named Happy.

Following the release of the first full-length trailer, Syfy ended the weekend at New York Comic-Con with an exclusive advanced screening of the drama's pilot episode. After the screening, Morrison, Meloni, directory Brian Taylor and writer Patrick McManus appeared on stage to discuss the new series.

According to CBR, when asked about his inspiration for the original comic, Morrison admitted the idea came to him while watching an episode of American Idol. The hopeful working-class kids singing their hearts out only to be torn down by a cynical and bored Simon Cowell inspired the writer to explore the conflict between intensely positive and intensely negative outlooks, giving us Nick Sax.

"As you can see [Nick is] a very cynical, a very sarcastic man who’s fallen from grace,” Morrison said, “and against him we have this fantastic little flying ball of positivity, who’s also quite annoying in his own way. and we hoped that we could kind of talk about some of the things that get on in the world and entertain people at the same time.”

Meloni followed by saying, “I’d never gotten a script that presented a world that was on the page here I mean, so much so I had to have two or three Skyping meetings with Brian which basically went like this, ‘So Brian, what is this world? What’s the tone of this world?’ And he just went, ‘It’s crazy, right?’ I just get this maniacal laugh out of Brian and so I basically signed on because of his maniacal laugh. That was about it.”

The television series premieres Wednesday, December 6 at 10 PM on Syfy. The Happy! Deluxe Hardcover (9781607068389, $24.99) edition with an exclusive television series cover jacket will be available December 5.
