Pop Culture Classroom Presents Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards

Pop Culture Classroom is a non-profit organization that uses the positive influence of comics, graphic novels, and other pop culture media to deliver high quality, all-inclusive educational resources to school districts, teachers, and community organizations. Their mission is to create educational engagement with students by providing them with the creative and critical thinking skills needed to put them on the path to lifelong learning.

Pop Culture Classroom has announced that it will be launching a new graphic novel awards program for the publishing industry named The Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards. The awards will celebrate the works in fiction and non-fiction graphic novels with an emphasis on books that can be used in the classroom.

The first awards ceremony will take place on June 15-17, 2018 at Denver Comic Con. Categories for the upcoming awards are as follows:

Book of the Year
Best in Educational Comics: Early Childhood
Best in Educational Comics: Primary
Best in Educational Comics: Secondary
Best New Voice
Innovator Award
Diversity Award

“More than four years ago, we set out to establish a new class of awards that recognizes the best in graphic novel publishing, but that also supports and encourages the increasing use of graphic novels in the educational market,” said Illya Kowalchuk, director of education for Pop Culture Classroom.

“To do that, one of our biggest goals is to create a program that ultimately benefits educators, librarians and retailers, by shining a spotlight on the use of graphic literature to inspire students at every reading level,” added Kowalchuk. “We are honored to have some of the greatest minds in the public library and school library systems contributing as advisors and judges, along with academic educators, K-12 specialists, and industry luminaries.”

Industry luminaries will make up the jury board, and five finalists in each category will be chosen and announced in advance of the awards ceremony. The jury will select a winner in each category by secret ballot vote, and all winners will be announced live at the awards ceremony at Denver Comic Con.
