Finalists for SEE-It Graphic Novel Award Announced

Announced earlier this year, EBSCO Information Services partnered with the Graphic Novel Committee of the Children's Book Council to create the SEE-IT Award. The acronym stands for Stories Engagingly Expressed-Illustratively Told, and is meant to recognize the cultural and literary impact of youth graphic novels. Finalists for the SEE-It award were decided based on four main criteria: literary quality, interweaving of art and story, lasting impact and distinguished contributions to the format and youth literature, and an audience range of K-12 (or young readers through young adult).

On Friday, April 14th, the finalists for the 2017 SEE-It Award were announced as follows:

  • The Imitation Game: Alan Turing Decoded by Jim Ottaviani and Leland Purvis
  • Light by Rob Cham
  • March: Book Three by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell
  • The Nameless City by Faith Erin Hicks and Jordie Bellaire
  • Rendez-vous in Phoenix by Tony Sandoval
  • Snow White: A Graphic Novel by Matt Phelan

Among the winners were two graphic novels by Diamond publishers: Light by Rob Cham and Rendez-vous in Phoenix by Tony Sandoval. Both graphic novels are published by Lion Forge's Magnetic Collection. For more information on these graphic novels, see below.

The winner of the SEE-It award will be announced at the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in June. For more information on the finalists and jurors, click here.

Light is a silent graphic novel that follows a pair of adventurers on an epic quest to collect five magic gems from deep inside the earth and bring them to the surface to return color to the world. On the way they carry fire-lit torches through secret places and endless passages, swim in crystal-clear waters, encounter strange beasts and creatures, and meet strange mysterious hermits! Writer/Artist Rob Cham creates beautiful vivid illustrations that gradually evolve from black and white subterranean worlds to vivid bright colorscapes. This inspiring all-ages story recalls retro video-game vibes and role playing games, creating a one-of-a-kind mythos of magic lands and mischievous critters.

Tony Sandoval was born and raised in northwestern Mexico, where the temptation to cross the border in the US becomes a matter of the heart. Drawn by Love, his urge to visit his American girlfriend can’t wait for the lengthy, frustrating visa process standing in the way of their relationship. So he makes the ultimate romantic gesture: smuggling himself across the border, despite the dangers he’ll face from the heat, coyotes, barbed wire, and – most daunting – the US border patrol…

An autobiographical account by the three-time Eisner-nominated writer/artist, an honest, true story about the hot-topic immigration issue in the news today.
