According to a joint estimate from Comichron's John Jackson Miller and ICv2's Milton Griepp, graphic novel sales in the book market have increased 16% to $405 million in 2016. The increase in sales growth of the graphic novel format continues with this latest data after growing 23% in 2015 and 16% in 2014. Comics in the graphic novel format is also the highest grossing format, beating out individual issue comic books ("floppies" or "pamphlets") and digital comics.

“It’s gratifying to see continued growth in the audience for graphic novels,” Griepp said. “This represents growth in the broadest part of the market, where increased variety of content is being found by new audiences for comics, including kids and women.”

The increase in diversity among content for kids leading to the increase in graphic novel sales was supported earlier this year by reports from the NPD group. During the ABC Children's Institute discussion "Trend and Findings in Children's Bookselling" delivered by NPD Book Client Development Speaclist Allison Risbridger, despite print sales being down by one percent year-over-year from 2010 to 2016, graphic novels have been the shining growth among print fiction. The increase has been attributed to the increase in children's and young adult categories in comics and graphic novels.

The momentum of comics and graphic novels sales in 2017 doesn't show any signs of waning as publishers such as Image Comics, Oni Press, Lion Forge, and others are publishing more children and young adult titles with diverse creators and casts.
